my macbook just started doing this today:
-shuts down immediately if unplugged
-won't start up
-battery lights aren't on
-coconut battery says that current charge is 100% and battery capacity is 78%
-coconut also says charger is connected but battery is not charging
-icon on menubar says battery is charged, and the charger light is green

help! i need to bring this notebook to class today and i'm so stressed out

gaucho:
is that link relevant to macbooks?

and i haven't ever calibrated.. :/

If resetting the PMU and removing/replacing the battery doesn't work it may be that either your battery is faulty or your logic board is faulty. Normally they will send you a new battery (with credit card deposit....once they receive the old battery back in the mail they will not charge you for the new one).....and if that doesn't work you'd probably have to get it repaired.

aw, that would be a huge inconvenience considering how my notebook is almost mandatory for class. thank you anyway, i'll have my school's apple store put in a work order.

could it possibly be anything else? my laptop is about 4 months old and the battery's fine according to coconut battery. it makes a whizzing sound (HD?) when i unplug and then shuts down :/

I had the same problem. It turned out to be the battery. My MBP would say the battery was at 100%, but within a few seconds of unplugging it would power-off. Apple replaced the battery, and that fixed it.

I had this problem and have just returned my macbook back to apple for repair after doing all the tests suggested.
