macbook shuts down instead of going to sleep mode

hows it going? anyways i have a black macbook with 2ghz intel core duo, 2gb ram and 10.5.5. when ever i close the lid it shuts down and i have to restarted by pushing the power button. i have tried putting it in sleep mode manual and it still turns off, if sumeone could please help thanks

Does your MacBook shut down and have to boot up with the "bong" tone or does it start up again with a gray screen of your desktop and a progress bar?

my mac has to restart with the "bong" noise and instead of going to the screen saver this pops up
