I just replaced the hard drive in my Macbook. After reformatting (Mac OS Extended, Journaled) the new drive I copied the contents of my old internal to it. The contents of the old drive were initially cloned to an external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner. The new drive shows up in the Finder with all files apparently intact but I can't designate as the Startup drive in System Preferences; there's not even an icon for the new drive.
