Macbook stuck on gray start up screen.

Hello,

The other day I was using my Macbook, when the trackpad stopped working. It then had a kernal attack, so I shut it off. When I restarted it, the screen was gray. The gray apple symbol didn't show up. Please help, and thanks for reading.

Thanks for the links. I got into the installation menu once, but my hard drive didn't show up. I plugged in an external drive, but it couldn't use it because it wasn't partitioned. Now, the installation menu won't show up. Any suggestions?
