So my macbook slot loading DVD drive (superdrive) has been picky for a while now about which DVDs/cds to load, and now it has finally failed. Won't play anything. It can barely eject the disk without it getting stuck. The keyboard above the DVD drive is warped... instead of being flat, there is a subtle crater above the drive. Unbelievable, I hate these slot loading drives.
So, if I want to install the new OS, I'm stuck... should I take this to the apple store and pay for it to be replaced? It is not under warranty, the laptop is 2.5 yrs old.
OR should i buy an external USB DVD burner for under $100. Can I boot/install OS X from such a drive?
