I haven't had to use the drive much the last couple of years. Now I need to and it's not reading discs.

The only option I have seen is to do a SMC reset. Any risks in doing that? Any other suggestions?

If u can hear that's constantly clicking, or put your hand on it, the drive it trying to calibrate itself and it's unsuccessful, so it keeps trying and trying, this is a sign that the drive is going bad or needs a re-format which will erase all data.
