Macbook switching between applications when closed and reopened

Hi,

For no apparent reason, my Macbook has recently started switching to a different application to the one I was previously using when I open it. So I can be using Firefox, say; close my Macbook; reopen it; and it will switch to another open application or Finder automatically. I've had this machine for five years, it's never done this before, and it just began a few weeks ago. I've been through system preferences and tried Googling a solution but can't find anything. Can anyone help? It's driving me a bit mad!
