So the Apple tech spec page for the Macbook says that the new USB 3.1 Type C port is limited to bandwidth speed of 5 Gbps rather than the 10 Gbps (theoretical) that USB 3.1 is capable of:
In other words, the USB 3.1 port is no faster than current USB 3.0 speed. I guess it's this sort of compromises that you can expect when introducing a new tech and most likely the reason I'd personally wait. It's good for Apple to add USB 3.1 without waiting for Intel to make it a standard feature on their chipset since that won't happen till 2016 but it's too bad Apple couldn't/wouldn't figure out a way to take advantage of the full speed that USB 3.1 is capable of.
