If anyone is having heat issues on the MacBook for just normal use, here is how I have mine set up and it sits between 60–70°C with my normal use.
Watching YouTube with about 20–30 tabs open and going back and forth using OneNote.
I use a program called ThrottleStop and have set it up so the CPU has a max burst for about 2 seconds and caps the frequency at 2.2 GHz.
I also used ChatGPT to recommend settings and so far for the past week of use the max temp has been 70°C or less. It also sips less power so the old battery is lasting longer.
There has been no lag in my use which has made it totally usable.
I did repaste the CPU and did the shim mod but this didn’t do much really for the heat issues I was experiencing. In fact, I think the heat pass-through to the bottom case was worse, or at least it felt worse.
So I use this MacBook for Windows since I need a few Windows programs I like to run, and also I can control my Windows desktop seamlessly from the trackpad with Mouse Without Borders. This saves having a mouse and keyboard while i veg on the couch with the MacBook.
If anyone cares, I also run Studio 5000 and Beckhoff TwinCAT on this machine with a little SCADA for testing.
I also have a MacBook Air 13”, 15” and a MacBook Pro 16” i9, but I still prefer the 12-inch MacBook for its portability, even over the 13-inch Air.
Sorry for the long rant, Throttlestop has breathed new life into this little MacBook.
Here’s my ThrottleStop settings
Speed shift EPP 64
Uncheck BD PROCHOT
Under TPL Tab
PL1 =6
PL2 =8
Check box clamp check box’s
Check Sync MMIO
Turbo Time Limit 2.0
