Macbook to HDTV Question

I just purchased a mini displayport to HDMI cable and with the output res at 720p and 1080i the screen size sits flush on the bottom but leaves a inch on the top and both sizes of my 50inch DLP. At first the screen was too large, I had to check off overscan in the prefs.

also when going from the tv back to the laptop unplugged all my windows resize is there a way to stop that?
