All I have is a basic hdmi cable is that all I need in order to hook up the macbook to the tv hdmi?
 
You need the mini display port to HDMI adapter. I bought mine on eBay for around 6 dollars, and it works like a charm.
 
To clarify, you might see it mentioned elsewhere that this is possible. It is with iMacs and Macbook Pros, but not Macbooks.

Actually, I stand corrected. It's supported in the latest version of the Macbook. HERE is the list of compatible computers from Apple that support Audio via a Displayport to HDMI adapter. Here is the one that I use.
