MacBook to TV

I have got a Mini-DVI to HDMI cable from ebay, when i put my HDMI cable from it into the TV, my macbook screen flashes blue every few seconds then comes back, and the display on the TV is the original desktop but nothing else?

Any help on how to get my MacBook display onto my TV would be great.

System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement > MIRROR DISPLAYS ?

Honestly, I don't think it is possible to do that, and the Ebay cord may have been a scam.

I must be stupid, totally mistook the DVI for Mini DisplayPort, which is quite an accomplishment I guess .

OP, as zacharace pointed out, what port do you have?

OP, are you sure it's a mini-DVI cable and not a mini-DisplayPort cable that you need? Look up your model here: http://support.apple.com/specs/#macbook
