Hi all. I have a late 2009 unibody macbook (6,1). Recently I have noticed cracks developing at the hinge on both sides. It no longer has applecare

Questions:
1) Is this cracking merely a cosmetic issue? OR will my screen suddenly snap at the hinge sometime?
2) I have heard about Apple resolving macbook cracking even if out of warranty. Is that only for pre-unibody though?

Thanks for any clarification

A crack in the plastic is common. It's just a crack in the plastic.

Apple wasn't replacing things just because they cracked. They are explicitly replacing top cases and display bezels on the pre-unibody MacBooks that are less than five years old.

If the crack is nothing more than cosmetic, great. Just want to make sure it is not compromising the structural integrity

Well my girlfriend's preunibody MacBook has cracks and slithers of plastic coming off here and there... She didn't care and didn't do anything about it. Its been almost 2 years since that started happening and the structure is fine. So I'd say its mainly cosmetic.
