I'd choose the imac. I have a macbook and I lust after the new imacs. I have to stay with a laptop until after I'm done with law school, but after that, it's imac all the way.

The macbook has only one advantage - it's portable. Other than that, the imac wins on everything - faster processor, bigger and faster HD, much MUCH better graphics, more ports, massively bigger screen, etc. etc.

The one and only reason to get a macbook is if you see yourself needing/wanting a computer away from your desk often. But if that's the case, as it is with me, you really have to choose the macbook.

I'm having the exact same debate right now.
Macbook pro vs Imac + Asus EEE PC.
The price would be about the same...
Advice?

For you, hold out until January and weigh your options then. That's if a MacBook Pro in a smaller shell interests you...

A friend in the same situation was certain she wanted a 17" MacBook Pro as her first Mac. As a long-time Mac user I advised she purchase the 24" iMac. Now she couldn't be happier.

My business needs are varied so I prefer to have one of each along with a powerful desktop. ;)

thanks

thank you everyone for your help
i think i am gonna purchase the imac
its all around good

I was in the exact same conundrum as you, evidently I went for the MacBook ;)
The reason why? Well for a start it was £100 less which is always nice and I figured that the option of portability would be nice to have even if ~98% of the times is spent at the desk ;). Also, if I need the larger screen estate I can add an external monitor at a later date (which I plan to do) and then if not, I don't have to worry about the larger size on the desk for example.
Either way, they're both great

Portability is not a must for me, but I would still pick the MacBook. Probably because im sitting in front of a desktop machine for 3 years now..
