I would rather have the iMac.

If it was MacBook Pro vs iMac, that's a different ball game.

Depends on what you use it for. I would have an iMac but I bounce around too much between my office and home for me to work on just a desktop.

The better value is the iMac. hands down!

But if you need it to b mobile then you have to go with the MacBook.

if it were me and it was to be my only comp i would go with the iMac. the MacBook is good but under powered compared to the iMac.

How come a MacBook pro makes it a different ball game what extra features are there? Or are there better specs?

Macbook Pro can have up to 8GB of RAM, a firewire 800 port, and a better enclosure. If you customize the 15in or 17in Macbook Pro, it can have the same processor as the base iMac.

I guess so... but I'm on a preferred 1200-$1400 budget and would also prefer to get a monitor for a MacBook if I get one.

If you don't need to be mobile with your computer, get the iMac. The Macbook will be slower, has a small screen and I am sure that it's more enjoyable to work on a 21.5" screen than on a 13.3" screen (for most people).

maybe if you just do some shopping around you can get what you want for less?

http://www.macconnection.com/

http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/featured.cgi?group=appcare

with those 2 resources, i could get either a macbook/AC or 21" imac for $1050

Thanks for the help but the first site is pretty much the same as apple developer/student discount and the rebates are mail in. The second site I've never heard of and they are only $5 cheaper than the offical site.
I could probably save $40 using those sites but the hassle really isn't worth it.

...get the 2.13Ghz whitebook from the refurb store for $749 when it pops up again and a HP or Dell monitor if you need portability...

If you don't need a portable machine get the prev gen 24" iMac with either the 2.93 or the 3.06 CPU for $1279 or $1349 respectively...

Prev gen machines are usually good/better deals as the known bugs are usually worked out and they carry the same warranty (see my sig)...
