So first time posting here and did a bit of searching around and could not find an overly helpful answer.
Here is the problem. The g/f lives in an apartment complex with a friend on the other side of the complex. She has permission to access the friends network but her airport will not pick up the signal. She has a macbook running 10.4.4
I purchased this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166055 as well as building a cantenna. I tested the cantenna on a pc with its wireless card and it was working flawlessly.
Next I installed the proper mac drivers, installed the usb device, and connected the cantenna. I then went to network devices and selected the usb device, I believe it was listed as an ethernet option, but not 100% sure ATM. I shut off her airport. I can search for wifi signals with the program that came with the usb device, but not many show up at all. I downloaded istumbler but can not search with the usb device. Come to think of it using her airport picks up more signals.
I do not have a mac so I am really having a difficult time getting this properly set up. At a minimum, with the cantenna, I would assume that I should see 2x the available wifi networks with the cantenna and this is simply not the case.
I would very much appreciate knowing what I am doing incorrectly and if anyone has step by step instructions to set this up properly?
