macbook wireless network detection speed

My macbook always takes a freaking age to see wireless networks, usually like 30-45 seconds of beach balling when i click on the airport icon, it's far worse if there are allot of networks about and especially bad with ad-hoc networks.

Has anyone else experienced this or is it just me?
