I'm purchasing a mac laptop for my mother. She doesn't need much horsepower so I was probably going to get her the base Macbook. The only issue is she needs Windows occasionally to do some web based work that requires Internet Explorer (very unfortunate). Do you think she could get away with the 32 bit version of Win7 with 1gb RAM allocated in Fusion? I realize 2GB of RAM is cheap but if it's not needed, OS X with 2gb RAM will be fine for the rest of her usage.

That looks OK per This. The only problem is if you have 2GB total RAM and 1GB goes to the VM, then you only have 1GB for OS X. It will work but it may be a little taxing on the HD especially if you have multiple tasks going on. I suggest using the VM without much OS X going on and close the VM when not in use. -GDF
