my MacBook will chime and it will sound like it is thinking then it turns itself off without going past the apple screen. I've reset the pram just posting to see if anybody else has had this trouble? I'll be ringing apple shortly.

I knew there was something else I had to say, I can't boot from the install cd either so surely it could be a bigger problem because I was thinking it was the HD.

Have you attempted the SMC reset also?

MacBook, MacBook Pro
If the computer is on, turn it off.
Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
Press the Power button to restart the computer

What I have managed to do is set up my ever dependable Lacie drive as my boot drive for the short term until I buy a replacement HD. Thanks for your help anyway.
