So here is my problem!
My macbook (late 2006 VINTAGE :b) started having start up problems a few weeks ago. It boots up slowly, the chime rings each time, and the login screen sometimes works(sometimes it doesn't make it), if it does, it loads the desktop, the dock, finder bar on the top. does not load files on desktop. Then the dock/finder bar start flickering on and off and I cannot click on anything. Eventually I have to shut down using power button.
Sometimes at the login screen it seems fine till I move the cursor and the login window disappears.
I've tried
1) Starting in Safe Mode- if it works it freezes at my login screen and doesn't let me do anything and I have to turn of with power button
2)Installer DVD ( I don't have my original disks-disappeared someplace between college an home :/) but I got a new DVD from the applecare folks.
a) tried booting from dvd by holding C when I boot up. Nothing happens, "boots" regularly -goes to flickering desktop screen
b)tried booting by holding "option" down. When the screen comes up to choose which volume to boot from it only displays the Macintosh HD. If I boot from that, same result as if I booted regularly. I've tried to eject and put the DVD in again, still doesn't show up.
c) tried inserting it upside down
someone said it sometimes works haha but no luck.
3) When this first started happening (before christmas) I tried resetting all the pram stuff and fsks or whatever it was. I haven't tried it again recently.
When I insert the DVD I can hear the drive working but nothing happens.
Another weird thing is (only) if the DVD is inserted, when I hit the power button once it goes to a blank blue screen with the turning gear at the bottom. this just sits until I power it off w/the power button.
>- Also I tried inserting the DVD after it got to the desktop - when I boot regularly it seems ok till after everything on the desktop loads. then all the bars start flickering. --this time however I inserted the DVD right after my desktop picture loaded and now I have the gear spinning on my desktop????/
If anyone has any ideas that'd be great! I can't seem to get much from apple as my applecare is expired as of 5 years ago and support sites don't have current information because its vintage now. bleh.
I don't think the harddrive is shot though the thought has crossed my mind :/ I haven't seen any question marks and the noises the computer makes haven't been much different than usual.
Thanks!
