So I've got myself into a situation here. My Macbook wasn't booting, it was stuck on the grey apple screen with gear. So I went through verbose mode and I don't remember the error but it said my drive could not be repaired.

Now, my optical disk is broken so I couldn't use my SL install disk. So what I ended up doing was taking the HD out and putting it in an enclosure and connecting it to my iMac to try and repair the disk with disk utility. Repair failed. I backed up the MB the day before with time machine, so data loss wasn't an issue and i wiped the drive.

Basically, I need to install a fresh copy of OS X on there, but I can't. When I had it connected to my iMac I popped the SL disc and told it to install to the external HD, but during installation after a restart the iMac just shut off. I guess what I need to know is I should be able to install Mac OS X to an external drive right??

And am what I doing the easiest way to get OS X on the drive?
