macbook wont boot

my mac book wont boot up and will only go as far as the grey screen, ive held the option key down and the disc image comes up but from there.....nothing.

Do i need the install disc or is there any thing on the web i can download onto a usb stick and transfer onto the macbook??

Hold down the C key when restarting with your installation disk inserted. You'll find all the Startup key combinations for Intel-based Macs here.
