Macbook won't recognize external hard drive after a few hours

Pretty regularly when I come home from work or wake up my macbook won't recognize my external hard drive (Verbatim Quad Interface 1 TB) after being connected to it for a few hours.

It always causes the system to freeze, finder to require a relaunch and any programs accessing the drive (iTunes, Transmission) to lock up.

I'm on OSX 10.6 on a 2006 Macbook.
