sometimes my macbook when i close it wont go to sleep the light is still on and when i open it up again its but sometimes it sleeps any idea as to what caused this and how to fix it also is it bad to turn off the mac from the power button if its completly unresponsive

Has anyone been inside it? The magnet in the display assembly needs to match up with where the battery board is located. Look to see if there's a magnet on the left side of the display assembly, and also look to see if the machine goes to sleep when you slowly wave a magnet over the left edge of the machine.

the only person whos been inside it was me and that was for ram upgrade it only happens occasionally so im thinking software issue
