MacBook won't startup

I've got a MacBook, A1181 model, that will not startup. Started with random shutdown a few weeks ago (workaround was to only use it with power plugged in). Now, it won't startup. All software up to date. When I try to startup I can hear hard drive start, but then it dies without screen coming on. Anyone know the fix? I plan on having a tech at work look at it (works on macs) but I'd like to know if anyone has had success in fixing same problem. I've read about possible heat sink issue, but before I go off and order one, want some feedback.
