MacBook won't stay asleep

I have an early 2006 MacBook (white if it matters) running Leopard. For some reason, when I put the computer to sleep and close the lid, after a few seconds it will try and wake up. I'll hear the drive going and see the Apple logo light up. Then right after it will go back to sleep. It does this until I open it up and use it. Also, sometimes whenever I open it up it's just a black screen, and the computer won't respond. I have to hard restart the computer. Does anyone know why it's doing this?
