Macbooked show a blinking 'world globe' at boot up

I just restarted my macbook and for the first time I've ever seen there was a black screen and a little circle that looked like earth at the bottom of the screen that was blinking for about 30 seconds. For a bit there I thought my computer was wrecked then the apple icon came on like normal and it booted up as expected.

But what was that blinking earth logo before the apple icon?
