MacBookPro 17" won't latch closed

The MacBook Pro has 2 small magnetic latches that close the screen to the base of the laptop. When I bought a new MBP in Sept, one these latches didn't close, preventing the screen from resting flat against the base.

I took it back to the Apple Store where the guys who dealt with me thought I was being a little fussy, but I insisted it was problem - so they swapped it for a new one.

You should DEFINITELY do the same.
