Is a macbook pro necessary for this task?

I plan to buy a macbook or a macbook pro to produce music (running virtual instruments which will eat up tons of RAM and the like) but i also want to connect it to a 24" monitor for more screen space for the audio editing. I have heard from some people that a macbookpro is needed because of the dedicated graphics card to handle rendering all the extra screen space and that a macbook cannot effectively do this. i also need the portability of a laptop

I dont need the firewire or the extra screen size cuase of teh external monitor.. so all i would be ungrading for is this graphics card. Is it needed?

Also, i want to pack as much RAM as possible on the computer... is it possible to effectively upgrade higher than the 4GB is says on the apple site?

Thanks everyone!
