I’m looking for some guidance on how I can configure my home network to help solve the following problems:

1. Transfer my photo library to an external source to enable me to import 50 GB of photos

2. Set up a backup strategy for my Macbook Air & Pro

Background

My photo libraries currently sit on my MacBook Pro and MacBook Air and due to a lack of storage space on this; they need to be moved onto an external device. I’ve also got photos from my digital camera, dropbox and other sources that I’d like to import but can’t do that until I move my photo library onto an external hard drive. Could I move the photo libraries onto a NAS hard drive or Apple Time Capsule? I do own a WD Passport but don’t like to idea of having it regularly plugged into my MacBook Pro and Air to access the photos.

In addition to freeing up space on my MacBooks, I’d also like to start backing up both MacBooks using a combination of Apple’s time machine, local bootable backups and some cloud based approach but have not idea of how to go about setting this up.

I’ve already got some existing Western Digital hard drives (these aren’t fully utilised yet as I’ve not fully configured my home network) that I’d like to make us of. I’ve also thought about buying Apple’s Time Capsule so that I can use it’s Time Machine capabilities.

1. 1 TB WD Passport
2. 4 TB WD MyCloud
3. 1 TB Dropbox Storage
4. 2 TB iCloud

Any help and guidance on how to configure my home network would be appreciated.
