Dan Steinberg (MacDevCenter.com) posts some notes from his experience at MacHack 2003.

Unfortunately, MacHack 2003 coverage was limited as it was obscurbed by the excitement surrounding this year's WWDC. WWDC was rescheduled within days of the 2003 MacHack conference this year.

MacHack is a developers conference with an 18 year history and a unique Hack Contest. Dan Steinberg sets the tone of the experience:

One of my favorite features is still the conference bag. Want one to match mine? Next time you're in a grocery store and they ask "paper or plastic" answer "plastic." It sets the tone for the conference. No fancy giveaways. No frills. We're here to learn from each other, to code together, and to hang out with people that care about the same things we do.

No time for a nap -- besides there's the unofficial conference motto that "sleep is for the weak.

Having attended MacHack myself and had the pleasure of meeting Dan, James and the many others including Rob Malda, I am pleased to say that the experience and excitement of MacHack was well worth it. I recommend to any developer (whether it be Carbon, Cocoa, Applescript, Java) to visit ADHOC next year as part of their development of their programming skills. Not only are the sessions great but the people you will meet who you can share resources and ideas with makes the entire trip worth while. Then again, you can always go just for the Hack contest.

sounds really cool but I doubt that I have a chance of going to that conference either . atleast with the wwdc I could watch a brodcast. I guess they are two totally different things though... the keynote at the wwdc and MacHack. They keynote was just like an expo. Bleh, i'm just tired :(.

sleep is indeed for the weak, as well as those developers that get confused when they hear the motto and sleep for a week instead. it's a shame WWDC stole the thing's thunder.

Is there anywhere we can download the hacks from this year's MacHack? I'd like to see the water-progress bar thing.

interesting fellow

I studied discreet mathematics with Steinberg in college. He's a great teacher, and inspired me to take another 8 or so math courses (I was a physics major). Due mostly to office politics, the college had to let him go. There was a big stink, and a lot of students petitioned to keep him around. I didn't realize he was the same guy until recently.

No. However, you can buy a CD full of the hacks from the MacHack website for about $15. You can get previous years' CDs as well.
