Machine crashing/hanging 2-3 times per day

You're not alone. When something stops responding, use the key chord for sysdiagnose. Include the end result in a bug report to Apple.
Crashes
In Terminal, enter the following command; be prepared to enter your admin password:
sudo nvram boot-args="-v keepsyms=y"
Then restart the Mac. After the next kernel panic (crash of the operating system occurs) there'll be relevant information in the backtrace in the .panic file.
