and i cant change it, any ideas what caused this? solution?

Corruption. Run the apple hardware test cd. After everything passes, reinstall the OS. Your time machine backup should still be viable, but if you want to be sure, back up everything and restore it manually.

If you are unable to back something up, try diskwarrior, but use it as a last resort. It's a godsend for fubar'd file systems, but there is always a risk when running third party disk utilities.
