Macintosh HD on desktop as external drive

Can anyone riddle me this:

My mac is set to show external drives on the desktop, but there is a Macintosh HD there that I "don't have permissions to open" and eject is greyed out. Any clue how to remove it?

If I choose to show regular hard drives on the desktop, my *actual* Mac HD shows up fine and disappears when I set it to.

Before you remove it, it's a good idea to know what it is. Do a Get Info on that desktop icon (Finder > File > Get Info). Is its Kind "Volume," or something else? Does its capacity match that of your "regular" Macintosh HD? The General and Sharing and Permissions sections may have some useful hints for you, too.

Is it possible you have multiple partitions on your hard drive? Open Disk Utility to see if/where that "external" Macintosh HD shows up.
