macMail - Mail Activity Area multiple outgoings and incomings

Something weird is going on with my MacMail. When I send and receive emails the mail activity area shows random number of "ghost" sends. Instead of, say if I send 1 email, "outgoing 1 of 1" or "incoming 1 of 1" or however many emails are incoming the activity area shows random amounts, for example one time it may be "outgoing 8 of 8" next time "outgoing 106 of 106" and the same for incoming. Of course I have not sent 8 (or whatever) emails and I don't receive a 106 (or whatever) number of incomings it shows. Can someone offer any ideas as to what may be at the root of his bizarre behaviour?

I'm having a similar problem and I already tried everything
possible.. Deleted prefs in my library and everywhere else but the problem is still there
Every time I check my email, in the small activity window, I see an incremental of two incoming messages and nothing is coming
If I check my email 7 times in a row I will have "14 incoming messages"
I'm trying to figure out where the activity pref is stored because THAT is what is causing the problem. So far no idea yet : (

Found the problem

I'm having a similar problem and I already tried everything
possible.. Deleted prefs in my library and everywhere else but the problem is still there

I checked the mail for every single account I have, one by one
and not all together as I usually do .
I found the culprit: a gmail account !

I deleted DefaultCounts in

/Users/yourname/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/DefaultCounts

then the old gmail IMAP account that I changed into POP sometime ago

/Users/yourname/Library/Mail/V2/IMAP-xxx@imap.gmail.com

Somehow Mail was keeping both
Everything works now.
