Today when I was checking out for another MBA 13" base with the appleinsider discount, I caught the fact that at the final checkout page, there was a new $101 charge for "sales tax"? My state is only 6% sales tax so what the heck is this new charge? Anyone else seeing this?

I justed created a sample order. I am in MD.

They are, indeed, charging sales tax.

Guess that takes them off my online merchant list

Same here and I live in Taxachusetts.

I think the list of companies not charging sales tax is shrinking and the day is coming where this will be the exception and not the norm

Ordered a couple weeks ago and there was no tax...and it's over the state tax percentage

Yes, there's also a push at the federal level to require online merchants to collect state sales taxes on interstate shipments. Amazon is getting behind it, as they are seeing the writing on the wall with more and more states pushing them to collect sales tax.

If they do collect taxes, it should be at MD level if that's where it's being shipped to, and not at CA's higher rate. I'd call them on it.

Most online retailers balk at the sales tax for everyone just because there are so many variances. This is taken from MacMall's site:

Tax Rate

In accordance with state and local law, your MacMall order will be taxed using the applicable sales tax or seller's use tax rate for your shipping address. If the tax rate changes before your purchase is shipped, the rate in effect at the time your order ships will apply.

Tax-exempt orders

If you believe your purchases are not subject to sales tax, please contact your Account Executive for assistance at (800) 622-6255 prior to placing an order.

Why do you say that? Amazon has always been the one who fights the hardest to avoid charging sales tax--even at the expense of ditching some of their affiliated merchants in some states.

They have, but they have also supported the senate bill (sponsored by Richard Durbin D-IL) since they claim that the main reason they are fighting each of the states is that they want a level playing field and not 50+ sets of rules. The Senate bill would theoretically create that level playing field since it would mean all merchants in all states would be collecting sales taxes. I'm not sure what eBay's position on the bill is, though, since occasional sellers might get caught up by it, too.

Check your states taxation department. Many states require you to self report out of state purchases and pay tax. Florida wants you to pay any difference in tax whether you bought something online or at a retail store in another state. One Midwestern state has you pay tax rate for your city, whether you buy something in your town, or in another in-state town.

So, don't complain about states wanting to collect revenue... And don't complain this winter when roads aren't snow-plowed or streets are flooded from breaks in old water pipes... Or there are reductions in services to counter the high unemploymant rates from local retailers going belly-up.

OMG please.... Misappropriation, overspending, etc are the cause. My state should be able to get its job done with what they already collect.

Ahh--thanks for clarifying--that makes sense and personally I would still buy from Amazon the same as I do now even with the tax so I tend to agree with that strategy.

Seems like this really going to hurt their sales. One of the reasons people buy from people like this is to save on the sales tax. There is a reason why Amazon is fighting so hard against this...

I live about 2 miles from MM brick & mortar but I generally order Apple stuff from Amazon because the CA sales tax is 9.25%. If Amazon goes ahead with this in CA. I'll just buy from MM they are too close and I can take the product off the shelf. :(

Called Macmall to ask why I was being charged sales tax even for an order shipping to Maryland. Turns out their online system is incorrect in charging tax to my state. The CS rep suggested that I place the order and have them remove the tax in arrear.

I have not done this yet. If you got charged tax when you should not have I would call with your order #.

i saw the sale tax at the final checkout page while ordering macbook air. i didn't see that coming.. i guess i'll just buy it from apple store and get the MBA right way since i'm paying tax anyways..
