Not sure if anyone else has thought of the transition from Mini to MacBook Pro, but I'll write on my impressions...

GREAT! I got the $1799 model 13" with Touch Bar.

It's zippier, for certain. The keyboard is nicer than the old wired keyboard I got with the Mini in 2013. It is super fast compared to the MacMini which has been souring in the last year or so. Speakers are incredible for a notebook (last laptop I had was a 2004 PowerBook).

Screen and trackpad are really nice. I find the trackpad a great device after using it for a few hours. The screen is small, but excellent in terms of readability and hues and brightness. The Bluetooth and Wifi are fast. The SSD is very fast.

I'm getting some SSD externals to hold data I use occasionally. This 256GB holds the basic data well.

It's so thin and light compared to the laptops I remember. This ain't your daddy's old mobile.

WORTH IT! Especially if you go mobile and want some pep. Sure, it will age quick, in the next 4-5 years, but it is a great buy for 2018 with $1800. I'm glad I purchased this instead of waiting for a new MacBook update.

I’m also a 2012 Mac Mini quad i7 owner looking for an upgrade. Thanks for sharing your experience with the new 13” MBP. The base i5 single-core geekbench score handily beats the Mini’s i7 and the multi-core score is considerably higher. Sounds like this base model is a great deal. But I think I’d have to go for larger storage and eat the cost.

You kept the mini, Do they airdrop each other?
YEP. I was airdropping contact info between them earlier.

They work well together. I'll keep the mini, downgrade it to OSX 10.9 and use it for CS3 work when called for.

If you have the cash, I'd recommend going as high as you can comfortably go.

But the $1799 TB MBP is good enough to put the mini to rest if you get some external storage.

I've realized across the past year that I carry around too much junk data from the past 18 years of OSX. Time to cut it loose and leave it on storage drives. I started fresh with this computer and trimmed out all my junk files and applications, and cut it down to necessities on the built-in drive.
