Mac Mini 7,1

Running Catalina - on shut down, or if it goes to sleep - crashes and reboots.
I am using a 30" Cinema Display from my old mac pro 1,1 that i salvaged using the appropriate adapter - could this be the problem? I ran a diagnostic of the hardware and no issue. Works great other than this shut down/sleep issue. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Can you try it with a different display?

Having said that...
- Go to the energy saver panel and set sleep for "never".
- If you see the option to "prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off", put a check into it.
- Go to the desktop/screen saver pref pane and set up a screen saver with a hot corner to activate.

Now, with this done...
When you're going to be away from the computer, just put the display to sleep and let the Mini "run", but "run at idle".
See if that takes care of the crashing while it's powered on.
(if it can't go to sleep, it won't "crash when waking back up")

YES. I KNOW this "doesn't solve the sleep problem".
But it might keep it from crashing on you.
