Hey folks,
In case anyone was interested, Chrome extensions that take over the new tab page seem to work with the just-released 11.3 version of Safari. I recompiled a version of Journal's Chrome extension using Xcode's Safari Web Extension Converter and when I enabled it a prompt asking to allow Journal to take over new tabs appeared.
This particular extension still needs tweaking as the random image it's supposed to display doesn't load/appear, but it's cool to know Chrome extensions can be easily converted to take advantage of the new tab functionality.
I have no idea if the extension I built can be used on other Macs, but it's signed so technically it should work, in case you wanted to see it for yourself. I'm actually curious if Safari extensions can be distributed this way or not – if you try it out, let me know if it works for you.
