My 2017 27" iMac has been happily chugging along now for 6 years and I haven't really thought about upgrading. However, now I see that MacOS 14 won't support it I'm thinking about alternative setups.

Should I sell the iMac now and maybe get a Mac Mini M2 with say a Dell U2723QE? Or perhaps bite the bullet and get the ASD and use my M2 MBP 14"? I use the iMac for basic tasks, bit of work with Adobe Animate and Lightroom Classic CC.

Anyone else having the same dilemma?

I'm sure that once Sonoma comes out OCLP will be able to support it on unsupported Macs. Especially considering that there is not much new in the OS.

The iMac's value isn't great at the moment, mainly BECAUSE it won't support Sonoma. If it's suiting your purposes I'd stick with it, but certainly have a plan for what comes next - ya never know when you'll need it ;)

In my case I'm a diehard still hoping for a 27 inch or larger iMac. But in any case I'm holding out for when we start seeing the M3 Macs.

Nope, not worried at all. I'm always a year behind when it comes to installing OS updates anyway, so I'll probably install Ventura when Sonoma comes out. I used to upgrade immediately, but the software seems buggier than previously (or just there are more people complaining about problems) and I don't use many of the new features anyway.

My 2017 iMac is still plenty fast enough and the display is fantastic. It's not missed a beat in six years, so I don't see any need to replace it. I also use x86 Windows under virtualization occasionally.

There's nothing in Apple's current computer range that really fits my needs. I'd like to continue with an all-in-one, but I also don't want to lose the lovely 27" 5K screen. I suppose if my iMac stopped working, I'd reluctantly opt for a Mac Mini with the 5K monitor, but hopefully that's not going to happen for a while.

Do you need a new computer? Is it too slow, or is it proving unreliable? If there's nothing wrong and there are no compelling features in Sonoma that are going to make your life better, then I'd stick with what you have.

The only potential issue is security updates and the like. Apple is still issuing them for Big Sur and Monterey, as well as Ventura, so those should be available for a few years yet (see: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201222).

my imac pretty struggle but my m1 air also struggle on xcode storyboard . If upgrade maybe 2 years more and mean time our work on intel 2017 . Some think transisition is fast but some not .

You've made some outstanding points Septercius, thanks heaps for your reply. Yep, my iMac does all that I need it to and I won't be selling it. Knowing that the security updates will still come out is a big plus.

If I were to sell it, I'd probably get around A$800 for it. A new Dell U2723QE would probably be that amount. So I'd be losing a computer and an awesome 5k screen to gain just a 4k monitor without speakers. Doesn't make sense....

Your 2017 will still receive 2 more years of Security Updates from macOS 13 for a total of 8 years.

If you do not need the features of macoS 14 then I'd wait after the final Security Update to buy into a Mac released that was refreshed after.
