I can open the mail.app; type and e-mail and hit 'send'
The send-button turns gray and no email is been send.
What can I try to fix this?

Go to the Menu Bar -> Mail -> Settings -> Accounts ->

Choose the account that is not working and then -> Server Settings -> Outgoing Mail Account

Sometimes - who knows why - there is no SMTP server selected anymore in the list, especially if you don't only use icloud.com addresses only or have more than one iCloud account.

Look if an outgoing (SMTP) server is even selected and if not click on "Edit SMTP server list" and choose the right account.

It gets even weirder: I saw a reply somewhere about trying to send an e-mail with an attachment; after I tried to attach a file to an e-mail it works again. Not flawless but I can send emails again…

Maybe just reboot your Mac. There should be no problem. I was very long on 15.4 (from Beta 1) and never had any problem, same for 15.5. And I use several email providers.

I would also recommend to do the Maintenance features of Onyx.

I did all that:
MacOS reboot (problem occurred after update to 15.4 so MacOS was rebooted anyhow.
Mail.app multiple quits and relaunches
Deleted Mail.app.plist
Deleted mail-account and re-added

The grayed out send button remained
Only after adding an attachment I can send mail again, but it remains a bit fiddly when sending.

BTW: I have multiple mail-account from different providers including Gmail and they all did work/not work so I think this must me an OS and/or Mail.app related issue.

Go to Mail Settings > Composing > Check Spelling. Hers was on 'when you click send'.
Change it to 'never' or 'as you type'. Voila.
I was able to reproduce the issue when I turned it back on as well.
Nice bug!
 
FWIW - I had tried Cocktail, changed DNS... privacy settings, etc. Nothing worked.

This fixed it.

That's it! Works for me too; the quirky behavior with sending was caused by this too.

I have had at least 6 apple support calls lasting many too, many minutes over the past 2 weeks..with zero resolution.your tip worked instantly!!!
