Slightly miffed after discovering some of my privacy / agency preserving settings reset after the upgrade to Tahoe. This was something that I only believed microsoft would do.

When (given the discussion about ads in maps) Apple will finally go forth with the push to insert ads within the OS, what would be the options to defend against this ?

Can you describe exactly what has happened? It's fair to say that some user preferences often get reset on an upgrade installation; but whether that's done in good faith, with malice, accident or incompetence, is hard to say.

Sure, it's fairly inconsequential, but it does hold a pattern. Mostly modification in the Safari landing page and the recommendation settings, wherein the Siri recommendation would pop up on top of my landing page, which is user defined as blank, and also modifications to the Spotlight search results, where again Siri would pop up when expressly disabled.

PS: I might have put my tinfoil hat on, but in the light of the behavior displayed by all the other technology giants, it would track.

If you're worried about privacy/ads on Mac, I suggest you use Little Snitch (or a free alternative like LuLu). Apple sends tons of data and likewise downloads tons of data that you don't know about, and much of it happens without any way to control it. Your mac is sending Apple a message every time you open an app, telling Apple what the exact app you launched.
