As of this week, whenever I type my name anywhere in macOS it switches it to BLOCK CAPITALS.

Bizarre, even by Apple's standards. If my name were John Smith, macOS helpfully corrects it JOHN SMITH.
  • No, my name isn't in block capitals in my contact card, or indeed any other contact card (even "Siri suggestions").
  • I have "Reset" the keyboard dictionary on my iPhone, but this has made no difference. I don't believe there's a way of doing this on macOS.
  • No, I don't have an autocorrect setup in system preferences to switch it to block capitals.

Just to be sure we're on the same page, when you say, "I don't have an autocorrect setup in system preferences to switch it to block capitals" you're referring to System Preferences > Keyboard > Text, correct? Have you tried unchecking both the "Correct spelling automatically" and "Capitalize words automatically" options to see if that makes a difference?

I'm also confused why you mentioned "resetting" the keyboard dictionary on your iPhone since you said this is happening in macOS, not iOS. Could you clarify?

Lastly, when you say "anywhere in macOS" do you mean this happens in ANY app running on macOS, or just in the Apple apps (e.g. Pages, TextEdit)?

Turning off "Capitalise Words Automatically" stops it happening, interestingly. But ultimately this is a feature I'd like switched on.

iCloud syncs settings across Apple devices including things like autocorrect. It had been happening on my iPhone too until I reset the keyboard dictionary. But it continues to happen on my Mac! Tried rebooting the Mac.

Well, it won't happen in Microsoft Word because that doesn't respect macOS' autocorrect settings. But it happens in all the apps that do – Notes, Mail, Safari etc.

That's very interesting, since that setting is supposed to only auto-correct initial capital letters AFAIK.

Thanks. I knew iCloud syncs a lot of things, of course, but I never realized it could sync auto-correct settings.

Got it.

I can't think of any other suggestions. Hopefully someone else can solve the mystery. In the meantime, a possible workaround would be to type your name (we'll go with "John Smith") but put a space before the last letter "John Smit h" and then arrow back and delete the space. That might "trick" the auto-correction from kicking in? Can't test this, though, because I'm not experiencing the issue.

I'm unable to reproduce the issue in any of the apps mentioned by the OP. @woolypants, what Mac are you using and on which macOS version? Are you using an external keyboard?

Well you wouldn't be able to reproduce it because this is clearly a bug. I didn't do this intentionally!

MacBook Pro 16in M1 Max, macOS Monterey 12.6.

Of course you didn't do it intentionally, but it's often worth trying to reproduce an issue to understand how it may have happened and how prevalent a bug it may be. Apple will do the same when you report it.

I had the same problem for some recent period. I spent a lot of time looking everywhere (tons of places) but found no solution. Recently MacOS Ventura 13.0.1 or 2 was released and that may have been the cause. I was travelling and didn't have the bandwidth or time slot to upgrade to Ventura 13.1 but did so just now and the BLOCK CAPITALIZING of my name went away. It was a bug and wasn't fixable in System Preferences as far as I know.

I wish it made sense to get to the source of problems these days.
