MacOS HD Space utilization as Reported by System Info

I am migrating data to my new M1 Mac Mini, from my M1Pro MBP. When looking at the storage tab under "About this Mac" I see an unreasonable amount of space taken by "System Data". The source machine reported 95GB (also unreasonable) but the migrated copy reported over 200GB. Both of these machines are running Monterey. I of course expect the migrated system to take up approximately the same space as the source, and cannot understand why there is a further 100GB loss to this category. What is it, and is there a way to reduce it to a reasonable level?
