My macOS High Sierra update installation from (macOS Sierra 10.12) was stuck on initial login screen on my Mac Mini, Mid 2011, 2,5 GHz, Core i5 with an SSD after the initial restart at the beginning of the update process. Repeated pressing of the shutdown button and restarting the Mac Mini always led to the same situation. Also I was not able to reboot into the former macOS Sierra 10.12.
My solution:
1. Reinstall macOS Sierra 10.12 (from a backup using Carbon Copy Cloner).
2. Boot into “Safe Mode” (holding down “Shift” during startup).
3. Run Disk Utility’s First Aid on the SSD.
4. Run macOS High Sierra installation app.
5. Allow the macOS High Sierra installation app to install “a new helper tool” when asked for (“Add Helper”-button).
6. Automatic reboot of the Mac Mini and automatic starting of the update installation process without any hick-up this time.
Update installation process successful!
