Steps to reproduce:
With macOS Monterey 12.2 (21D49), turn on the power with the SDXC card inserted in the SD card slot on the back of the iMac 5K.

There was no problem until macOS Monterey 12.1 (21C52).

Workaround:
1) The SDXC card is not inserted in the SD card slot on the back when the power is turned on.
2) If you insert it into the SD card slot when using it, it will be recognized and usable without any problem.

* Before turning off the power, it is recommended to unmount and remove the SDXC card from the SD card slot on the back.

I have the same problem on my iMac(27-inch, 2019) CPU:3.0 GHz Intel Core i5, I don't think your workaround did it for me, I am pretty sure I removed and reinserted the Sd Card multiple times before reverting to 12.1

The Sd Card also doesn't get mounted on the 12.2 Recovery.

I opened up a question here some hours ago and another fellow also replied having this problem.

My iMac is also iMac (27-inch, 2019) CPU: 3.0 GHz Intel Core i5 model.
But it's SSD 512GB CTO model.

It's strange that Workaround on my iMac has no effect.

Indeed, SD card was not recognized by the Disk Utility in Recovery mode on my iMac.

I tried it in a new user environment with Safe Boot. The SD card inserted after turning on the power was recognized.

Certainly, it ’s strange.

I reproduced your workaround and I confirm that it's working in my case.
I would call it an irritating macOS bug, if you forget an Sd Card in the slot, you have to shutdown the iMac, remove it, boot again and only then insert an Sd Card to use it.

An easy and cheap solution:
Get a USB card reader.

The SD slot on Macs can be tricky. The Mac will quickly recognize/read some cards, but give problems with others.

You will be amazed at how much better a card reader can work in such situations...

Yeah, but one the big selling points of the iMac was that it is All in One PC, without extra dongles and cables connected to peripherals lying around. 😉
It was one the points that informed my decision to purchase an iMac back in 2019.
Also they should "Just work" without weird driver issues.

I agree, selling point or point of failure? I have the same issue as most of you here, my card reader since these last round of updates has become totally unreliable. The SD Card reader works sometimes but mostly with my SONY A7iii camera cards, the GoPro cards never mount any more. I sometimes will see the GoPro drives listed in the finder window of drives with a strange name on it that it never had before, the same name is listed in Disk Util. Also I have noticed in the system profiler, under card reader that the card reader shows up always but does not always show quickly that a working card in in the slot. I called Apple today to complain and report the issue and they had be do system diagnostic profile to send to the engineers. I will hear back in 5-10 days. I have to say, what passes today for 3rd level apple support is pretty unimpressive. Many times I feel like I know more than they do.

I think the best route is to get an external as backup now. In production situations you can't rely on Apple nowadays I guess, at least not till they figure this out.

I don't know if it's related but my computer wouldn't mount NTFS or FAT formatted disks in Monterey 12.2.1. I don't know if Monterey would mount them at any point before 12.2.1.

I discovered the culprit for me (I upgraded this computer from Mojave) was some old software files previously installed…probably FUSE or TUXERA or similar software from Mojave. They were in /Library/Filesystems.

It seems to have been fixed in the macOS Monterey 12.3 (21E230) update released today.
I'm happy.

Is there a problem with the Mac mini ?

Does it mean that there was no problem up to macOS Monterey 12.2 and it became a problem after updating to 12.3?
This update for macOS Monterey 12.3 also includes a Firmware update, which may be the cause.

Correct. The SD slot was working in 12.2 and stopped working after I upgraded to 12.3. I've tried a few different cards that previously mounted in 12.2 and they do not mount now in the SD slot. However if I put the card into a SD reader and plug into the USB port, it mounts.

Is it a problem with Mac mini Late 2012 ?
According to Apple's information, macOS 12 Monterey support seems to be after Mac mini Late 2014 .
Mac mini Late 2012 seems to be an unsupported model.
macOS Monterey 12.3 includes a Firmware update, so it may have been affected.

Hi there. Same problem as all of you mentioned. With Monterey 12.3.1 my SD Card reader keeps disappearing from the Finder. I am unable to transfer files off it. Talking to Apple they said Monterey OS cannot read FAT16 format and I should look into a 3rd party software to allow me to use my SD card reader that is in FAT16 format. Does that make sense to you guys? All I want to do is get my Gopro Hero 5 media which is on a microSD saved on to my dropbox.

Thanks

H

In my case, the same SD mounts using a SD adapter, so I don't think its the OS. Tne update is preventing the built in reader from reading the card.

The easy "workaround" for problem SD cards is to have a 3rd-party USB card reader close by.
If the internal SD slot is acting up... just use the external reader.

It was never fixed. I'm on 12.6.4 and cannot get my SD cards to read in the built-in reader in my iMac 18,3 on a reliable basis. Resetting NVRAM/SMC, etc., works for a short period of time, but it just fails to work again later.

Apple has been on a slow spiral into the toilet since 2013 and the software is the absolute worst part of all. The number of bugs in Monterey is absolutely INEXCUSABLE.

EDIT: One of my USB multi-card readers, from Belkin, ALSO does not function, though it's shown as present when connected (System Information shows it, but no media inserted). Another reader, from Sandisk, works, but it's only got SD capability, not CF, and I have a lot of CF cards here...
