MacOS Photos App Storage

I have 42GB of Photos stored in iCloud (and locally on my iPhone). I would like to access these photos on my MacBook through the Photos app. However, I don't want to use up 42GB of space on my MacBook. If I enable iCloud Photos and enable Optimize Storage, how much space will the photos take up on my laptop?

i also have looked before for an answer to this but was unable to find a definitive one.
from my own experience it might be around 5 or 6 GB, however.
