The macOS Sequoia 15.3 beta brings Genmoji to the Mac, allowing Mac users to use the custom made emoji characters for the first time. Genmoji were included in iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2, but the feature was not available in the macOS 15.2 update.

With Genmoji, Mac users can input a text prompt to create a custom character that behaves just like an emoji on devices running iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, macOS Sequoia 15.1 and later. On earlier versions of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, and on Android devices, Genmoji show up as an image.

Genmoji can be added from the emoji palette on the keyboard, which can be activated with the Control + Command + Space keyboard shortcut in an app like Notes or by clicking on the emoji icon in Messages.

Genmoji is an Apple Intelligence feature that is available on all Macs that have an Apple silicon chip. All Genmoji generation is done directly on-device.

I was so confused because I thought Image Playground and Genmoji were the same thing. Apparently not?
Image Playground is a separate new app to create full images. Genmoji only creates emoji and is accessed anywhere via the emoji picker.

Make a brand-new Genmoji right in the keyboard to match any conversation. Provide a description to see a preview, and adjust your description until it’s perfect. You can even pick someone from your Photos library and create a Genmoji that looks like them.

Produce fun, original images in seconds with the Image Playground experience right in your apps. Create an entirely new image based on a description, suggested concepts, and even a person from your Photos library. You can easily adjust the style and make changes to match a Messages thread, your Freeform board, or a slide in Keynote.

Experiment with different concepts and try out image styles like animation, illustration, and sketch in the dedicated Image Playground app. Create custom images to share with friends in other apps or on social media.

Most of the IOS 18 and Mac OS Sequoia features are useless for most of us, Image playground was the first app I deleted on my IPhone after playing with it for 5 minutes, all it did was draining my battery and made the phone hot, and Siri still the same since 2010

All the progress now is gimmicks without any real productivity or usefulness.

I’m running the latest released version 15.2 on my Mac Studio. I disabled Apple Intelligence as I have no interest in it.
When I install 18.3 after its release, Apple Intelligence will remain off. Don’t need this stuff. YMMV, good to have choices.

I'm just trying this on my MacBook M1. (I don't have iPhone 16.) For some reason, when I want to base one on a person in my Photos, only about half of the people I have identified shows up as available for Genmoji.
