I thought I'd discuss a few of my issues with Tahoe and ask if anyone else is experiencing the same problems.

When my M1 Mac mini goes into sleep mode, it shows me this after I wake it up. I never disconnected the drive. It also does this with an SD card I have plugged in. It does it regardless of being plugged into the computer itself or in a hub.
(in case you were wondering, I ran a terminal command long ago to make my screenshots in JPG instead of PNG to save space. That's why this isn't transparent)

Also, when I click on a desktop shortcut, I have to click on the center part of it. The clickable area that actually performs the shortcut is shown when I click. If I click more towards the edge of the shortcut, it opens the Shortcuts app instead and does not perform the shortcut.

Also, when I wake my Mac mini, it still shows the screen saver and I have to input again to get to the screen.

Tahoe still feels like a beta. We need a Snow Tahoe next year 🤣. Is anyone else experiencing these problems?

External Time Machine Drive Not Showing in Finder on macOS 26 Tahoe

After upgrading to macOS 26 “Tahoe,” my external Time Machine backup drive (WDN850_Black), which used to appear consistently in Finder under macOS 15 “Sequoia,” no longer shows up automatically.

  • The drive is still present and intact, confirmed via diskutil list and diskutil apfs list.
  • A filesystem check (fsck_apfs) showed no errors.
  • Temporarily removing the drive from Time Machine allowed it to appear in Finder. Re-adding it made it visible briefly.
  • After restarting the Mac, the drive disappears again from Finder, even though it exists in the system.
Has anyone else experienced this behavior under macOS 26 Tahoe?

Since upgrading to macOS 26 Tahoe, I’ve noticed another issue besides the problems with my external backup drive: the Mac no longer reliably goes to sleep.

I noticed this because I use the app Sleep Aid by Ohanaware. Under Potential Software Cause, the following processes are shown:

  • cameracaptured-idleSleepPreventionForBWFigCaptureDevice (appears when WhatsApp Desktop is running and prevents sleep)
  • keepalive-push.apple.com-NonCellular (related to Push Notifications and also blocks sleep)
I did not experience these problems under macOS 15 Sequoia. They only started occurring after the update to Tahoe.

Has anyone else in the forum experienced similar issues with sleep being blocked by WhatsApp or push-related processes under macOS 26?

Tahoe is awful. Using plex as a server on a Mac after Tahoe kills live tv working. Using a VPN when I disconnect all internet stops working rather than working not through the vpn. Low battery notifications come up so often and't can't be dismissed. Brightness and volume in the top corner where my eyes have to move to look to see. It's the worst update to macOS I have ever seen and I have been using Macs since leopard.

Glad I'm not the only one annoyed by the brightness and volume thing. When you adjust either, your eyes naturally go to the key you pressed to make the adjustment. Having the brightness and volume scales show at the bottom of the screen just made sense since your eyes were already focused there. This is just another Tahoe change for change's sake. Makes no sense. In my two decades of using Macs, this is the first OS I've really hated.

On my second Mac (MacBook Air M1) I did notice the battery notifications and they are quite annoying. It had me stop what I was doing and look for ways to turn it off, to no success.

When I first installed Tahoe, I thought my volume keys were not working. I looked up and saw the controls. Took me some getting used to considering I use a 27" monitor.
A better idea for the volume controls would be to appear in the left center. Makes it more like iOS (Apple's goal with Tahoe) and makes it easier to see.

I wouldn't go so far as to say I "hate it," but it's by far my least favorite and most buggy macOS update of all time... and that's saying a lot considering how much I disliked Mac OS 8 and OSX Lion.

Hi..I have the same problem with WhatsApp. Is there any app to force MacBook to go to sleep?

Hi,

WhatsApp blocks idle sleep while running (Application.Net.whatsapp.WhatsApp). Sleep Aid may also show cameracaptured-idleSleepPreventionForBWFigCaptureDevice, but this does not actually prevent sleep.

The easiest fix is to quit WhatsApp. You can also use a small script via Sleep Aid → Custom Command:

#!/bin/bash
pmset sleepnow

regards

Yeah I've had that disk ejected issue for ages now too.

The main bug I've found is Visual Studio Code causes massive GPU load, the more windows I have open the worse it gets, to the point that for the first time ever the fan has been coming on in my M1 Max MacBook Pro! Quitting VS Code or closing as many windows as possible brings things back into line.

Do you mean the Mac goes to sleep anyway?

Hi,

No, the Mac does not reliably go to sleep while WhatsApp Desktop is running. Sleep Aid shows cameracaptured-idleSleepPreventionForBWFigCaptureDevice during that time, but even when the Mac appears to go idle, it often “wakes” again on its own, and the display sometimes cycles to gray or shows DisplayPort.

Quitting WhatsApp or using Sleep Aid’s custom script (pmset sleepnow) seems to be the only reliable way to get the Mac to sleep.

This issue did not occur on macOS 15 Sequoia; it started after upgrading to macOS 26 Tahoe.

PS: Is it really possible that we’re the only ones who have noticed this bug? So strange.

as a Mac owner who purchased 2002 Jaguar for home user on my iMac G3 and abhorred Mavericks,
I can truly attest that Tahoe OS (which I will never type again) is the worst I have used.

today I need to revert back to Monterey on the M1 mini since the latest OS is really bad.
the OS is fast, cute but not performing as I need to and too annoying.
then the MacBook Air M1 gets the revert Tuesday.
hopefully  won't see that update red dot my M1s but I rather see that than put up with iPod G6 software on a computer.

so sad how  lost their way!
yes, Windows OS is getting worse, I read.

perhaps all that over-blown summer tech hype made matter worse in autumn?

It is still there after last WhatsApp update - an it looks like this actually appeared with 26.1. I don't remember this happening on 26.0.1
Code:
[~]$ pmset -g assertions|grep WhatsApp
   pid 17115(WhatsApp): [0x000129480001a26b] 00:00:10 PreventUserIdleSystemSleep named: "cameracaptured-idleSleepPreventionForBWFigCaptureDevice"
I ended up using web app until this is fixed...

Hi, thanks for sharing your experience. Just to clarify—when you say you ended up using the web app, did you also try the Desktop version?

For me, the same sleep-prevention issue happens with the WhatsApp Desktop app (version 25.35.72), and it already started appearing with macOS 26.0.1.

Have you noticed the same behavior on the Desktop app, or only on the web app?

Thanks,

Andreas
