I have a Mac Pro with Ventura 13.0.1 and three Synology DS418 NASes. I also use another Synology DS1817 NAS and several other NASes such as Drobo.

If I attempt to access any of the DS418 NASes with either Finder or Time Machine, the Mac Pro instantly freezes, the screen turns black and it reboots. All the other NASes, including the Synology DS1817 continue to work fine - no problems.

I'm thinking there may be some sort of incompatibility between Ventura and the DS418 NASes. All of the units worked fine under Monterey.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Harald,

No crash logs visible in Console. The "Crash Reports" category is empty, but I'm no expert at this, so maybe there is one and it isn't obvious.

Synology so far says they have no clue, even though some of their hardware works, and others don't.

Here's their latest "logic":

At this time there is no reason to indicate that that our SW or firmware is the reason for your system reboots. The only change is the new OS on your MAC. This would point to an issue with how your MAC is behaving with standard protocols used across all networking devices.

I need to open a ticket with Apple I guess - I have no idea how to do that but probably DuckDuckGo is my friend.

I have sent (probably dozens of) crash reports to Apple - one immediately after each reboot. I don't know where to find them locally...

I'll keep pecking on this - my backups are at stake!

Tom

PS: It's fascinating that some incompatibility like this - probably over ethernet - can cause instant reboots!

Hi!

Did you ever get this sorted out. Same exact thing happening to me with my G-raid studio since updating to Ventura.

Tram,

I didn't tell Apple or Synology because they were so, um, aloof but I finally figured it out at least for my setup.

I had to disable AFP on each NAS, and only use SMB to connect with them. It has worked fine now for months.

Hope this helps,

Tom
